Tying a Deer-hair Surface Lure
Step 1
![]()
Clamp a mount into the vice, catch on the thread and run it down to the
end of the hookshank .
Step 2
![]()
Cut a bundle of Deerhair from a patch. I'm using Elk body hair from Wapsi.
Clean the fluff and short hair from the bundle and trim the fine end off,
square with the initial cut.
Keeping a tight hold, offer the hair up to the underside of the hook and
take two loose wraps of thread around the bundle.
Still keeping a tight hold of the hair, pull the thread to tighten the wraps
you've just done. This should flair the hair but NOT spin it.
Step 3
![]()
Repeat the above step, only this time, hold the hair on top of the hookshank,
above the the first bunch. Tie the top bundle directly above the first,
using the same mounting point.
Work the thread through the hair, avoiding trapping any, to the front of
the bundles.
With your left hand hold the rear of the hair, and using your right hand
push the front of the bundle rearwards to compact the hair.
Wind on a few turns of thread in front of the bundle to hold it in position.
The hair can be spun on instead, and for a far better tutorial than I could
ever do, check the following sequences:

Step 4
![]()
Continue down the hookshank repeating the previous steps until you've filled
the hook with Deer hair.
Tie off with two or three whip-finishes.
Step 5
![]()
With scissors or a razor blade, trim the hair flat on all four sides. This
should leave you with an elongated square of Deer hair from which to sculpt
yuor Surface Lure.
Step 6
![]()
With a razor blade, slowly and carefully trim the lure to the shape you
require.
Allow plenty of clearance around the underside, especially around the gape
of the hook.
