Black and Silver Medicine

Step 1

Clamp a silver Partridge 'Salar' (ref CS14/1S) into the jaws of the vice. .
Catch on the black thread and tie it down with a couple of trapping wraps.
Trim the tag-end.

Step 2

Take a suitable black cock hackle and tie it in, in you chosen style. I've used the 'DeFeo' method. The ends of the hackle fibres should be between approx. level with the hook's barb.
Keep the hackle sparce, the aim is to produce a slim, mobile fly, not one with real substance.

Step 3

Take a patch of black Arctic Fox hair and from it, cut a slim bunch. It doesn't really matter whether you use tail or body hair, but body hair is finer and more suited to smaller sizes.
Grasp the bunch of hair by the tips and remove any of the fine under-fur. Now Take hold of the roots of the bunch and remove any long, coarse guard-hair.
Tie the bunch of hair at the desired length and trim the waste. At this point, I usually put a blob of head cement on the roots, before forming the head and whip-finishing.

As with most patterns, this is more a style of fly than a specific pattern. Below are a couple of other common fles tied in the same way: a Medicine, and a Peter Ross.
